BRATISLAVA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) — Slovakia’s ice hockey team defeated Russian Olympic Team 3-1 on Saturday for a chance to fight for the fifth Deutschland Cup trophy against Germany.
The Russians started strongly with a 1-0 lead just 2:30 minutes into the game when the 20-year-old Roman Bychkov scored from close range after a pass from the right-side boards.
The Slovaks managed to respond in the same period as Samuel Takac tied the game three minutes later after he intercepted a pass, took the puck deep, and aimed at his attempt well. In the 14th minute, HK Nitra forward Adrian Holesinsky put Slovakia ahead 2-1 after another great intercept and a successful rebound.
Nine minutes before the final siren, the Slovaks managed to stretch the lead to 3-1 after Samuel Bucek’s precise wrister.
Slovakia leads the standings of the four-team tournament played as a preparation event for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing with two wins, identical to Germany. Their Sunday duel will also determine the winner of the Deutschland Cup trophy.
