With five goals to his credit, Cristiano Ronaldo won the Golden Boot for the top scorer at the 2021 European Championships (EURO 2020) on Sunday.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo won Euro 2020, Golden Boot, as no one from England or Italy managed to top his tally in the tournament final at Wembley on Sunday.
Ronaldo had scored five goals in the competition – the same as Czech forward Patrik Schick – and won thanks to the assist tiebreaker. Three of his goals came from penalties, while the other two from open play against Hungary and Germany.
UEFA uses assists as a play-off, then the fewest minutes played and then, finally, the goals scored in qualifying if necessary to decree an overall winner.
Ronaldo is also the top scorer of the Euro Cup with 14 goals. With two goals in the last group match against France, Ronaldo scored 109 goals for his national team, equaling the world record set by Iranian Ali Daei.
Cristiano Ronaldo leads with 24 appearances. Followed by the German Bastian Schweinsteiger with 18 and the Italian Gianluigi Buffon with 17.
Ronaldo tops the list with the most finals. He played in 5 finals for Portugal – 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020. Legends such as Lothar Matthaus, Alessandro Del Piero, Edwin van der Sar, Lilian Thuram, Gianluigi Buffon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, among others have made appearances in 4 EUR.
Portugal, who won Euro 2016 in France, saw their defense of the trophy end in the round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat to Belgium.
