Savarino leaves the Flamengo champions in trouble

(Xinhua) – RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 (Xinhua) – Venezuelan winger Jefferson Savarino scored two goals in the second half when Atletico Mineiro beat defending champions Flamengo 2-1 in the Brazilian Serie A match of Wednesday.

Savarino put the hosts ahead by hitting a goal for the first time over goalkeeper Diego Alves after the Hulk pass in the 51st minute. Doubled two minutes later, timing his run to perfection and slipping to the far post on a cross from Mariano.

William Arao recovered a goal for the visitors with a massive header from Rene’s corner, but it was too late for the Rio de Janeiro giants, who suffered their fourth defeat in eight games.

Atletico Mineiro won three consecutive games to climb to fourth place in the 20-team standings. Flamengo are 11th with 12 points, having lost three of their last four games.

Elsewhere no Wednesday, Palmeiras climbed to the top of the standings after beating Gremio 2-0.

The defending Copa Libertadores champions are now 22 points clear of Bragantino in goal difference.

And Bahia moved up to sixth after a 79th-minute goal from Matheus Santos, which gave them a 1-0 win.
