The Junior Springboks got a clinical performance to claim a 27-9 win over Argentina’s Pumitas in the U20 International Series final in Newlands on Saturday.
Game Flow: In a brutally physical bout, the Junior Springboks were able to claim a series win over a tenacious Pumitas team that was never out of the contest until the final 15 minutes.
Argentina’s U20 got the better of the opening exchanges, giving the Junior Boks a lot of problems in the maul and scrum. Under pressure, the home team conceded too many penalties and were punished by Argentine Ramiro Waisberg, who kicked all of his penalties in the first half.
However, to their credit, Bafana Nhleko’s side grew in the game as they moved forward and took the 13-9 lead at half-time thanks to center tries Henco van Wyk and Bobby Alexander.
The second half turned into a confrontation as rain began to descend in Cape Town. However, the Junior Springboks struck a decisive blow in the 65th minute, when their pressure ultimately revealed itself as Andre-Hugo Venter scored his first of two driving maul tries.
Try as they might, Argentinian Pumitas never recovered and the match was nearly sealed as Venter went over for his second try just as he honked the horn full time.
