United remain furious at what they claim were ‘classless’ celebrations by their opponents which spilled out of the dressing room. Tempers were already at boiling point after United’s Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera had a late penalty appeal turned down following a clash with Nicolas Otamendi and was booked for diving. Moment of the Round: Manchester City’s record win at Old Trafford. Mourinho’s mood soured after he watched a replay of the incident on TV in the home dressing room.

He was adamant it should have been a penalty. That was when he went to have it out with ref Michael Oliver in the officials’ room. On the way, City’s dressing-room door swung open and Mourinho heard their celebrations at full volume.

Already incensed, he targeted City’s Brazilian keeper Ederson. The pair then argued in Portuguese before Mourinho reminded City they had yet to win the title. That led to the scuffle involving 20 players and staff from both sides.

Punches were thrown — but none connected — and there was plenty of shoving and pushing and elbowing. Ref Oliver did not see the incident and therefore did not put it in his report. Watch Jose Mourinho’s full reaction after Manchester United’s loss at home to Manchester City. Man City have proved the ‘Barca way’ can work in England say Pep Guardiola
