Luis Bonini, who Lille boss Marcelo Bielsa was suspended for travelling to Chile to visit, has sadly died from cancer

CANCER-STRICKEN Luis Bonini, who Marcelo Bielsa has been suspended for travelling to Chile to visit, has sadly died.

Lille revealed they have provisionally suspended their under-fire Argentinian boss.

And, though an official explanation was not given, it is understood to be because he travelled to Chile to see his dying friend without the club’s permission.

Bonini was described as being “closer to God than us” prior to Bielsa’s visit.

And just hours after Lille’s announced their manager’s suspension, it was confirmed he tragically had passed away.

Bonini was a long-time assistant to Bielsa, working under him at seven clubs — including Argentina, Chile and Athletic Bilbao.

The Basque-based La Liga side are expected to wear black armbands in his honour when they host Hertha Berlin tonight.

Athletic will also welcome “Professor” Bonini’s family and friends to San Mames for the clash.
