LIVERPOOL and Manchester United may top their Champions League groups – but both of them could amazingly yet end up in the Europa League.
Picture, for instance, a 1-0 Spartak Moscow win at Liverpool in the final group game combined with a Sevilla win at Maribor.
That would send Jurgen Klopp’s side into the second tier competition.
United could follow suit if they lose to CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford by six goals and Basel beat pointless Benfica.
Both scenarios would appear improbable… but you never know.
For surprise results this week have upset the applecart.
Liverpool were 3-0 up at Sevilla on Tuesday and somehow managed to turn a potential thumping win into a 3-3 draw.
A much-changed United side dominated in Switzerland on Wednesday and should have wrapped been out of sight by half-time, but lost 1-0 to a last minute goal.
It all means that the Reds and the Red Devils still have work to do.
But both sides have home games in which to complete the job.

And, in Liverpool’s case, if they can’t beat (or draw) with Spartak they probably don’t deserve to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds.
But the truth is we do expect FIVE English clubs to make it.
