One judge awarded the fight 118-110 in favour of Canelo, while another gave GGG the vistory at 115-113.

However, it was the third judge’s decision of a draw at 114-114 — and in particular his decision to to give round seven to the Mexican — which has caused the most controversy.

But the Golden Boy promoter De La Hoya fans can look forward to a rematch between the two big-punching middleweights.

The decision sparked controversy among fight fans, who thought Golovkin should have been awarded the victory.

Canelo is a battler, and he fought back at the end to put himself in contention on points.

The Mexican insisted he felt he had won the fight, and his final flurry was just to “consolidate the victory.”

A rematch is likely take place in May.
